Abstract

Recommendations for colored stripes and raised ridges as identification markings on non-conducting and semiconducting underground power cable jackets are provided in this guide. Typically, power cables are identified by red stripes; however, other colors may be permitted. The guide also applies to the duct containing jacketed or unjacketed underground power cables. The colored stripe recommendations include the number of stripes, color, width, thickness, color retention characteristics, physical properties, storage criteria, and test methods. The raised ridge recommendations include physical properties, width, height, and circumferential spacing. It is the intent of this guide to provide a minimum level of physical, chemical, and color stability of colored stripes used to identify underground power cable jackets and ducts.

Abstract

Autonomous ships, like autonomous cars, can guide themselves without human conduction. AI and the future of computers taking over the art of driving is now our reality. The autonomous ship is a vessel that can operate fully on its own, without a crew, and is equipped with software to manage its movements. The interest in this field is growing rapidly with conferences dedicated to this specific technology. Forbes has stated that autonomous ships increase efficiency, improve safety, and relieve humans from unsafe and repetitive tasks.

Abstract

The sewn-plank ships that sailed the Indian Ocean during the medieval Islamic period carried people, goods, and ideas between East Africa, Arabia, India, and China. Despite their key role, we know relatively little about them. To date, archaeological work related to sewn boats in the region has been limited, while the few textual references generally lack crucial details regarding their design, structure, and operation. Due to the paucity of archaeological evidence until 20 years ago, the study of medieval shipbuilding in the region has often been flawed by Orientalism and fuelled by principles of the Enlightenment in early studies. Scholars had previously approached this topic through a European lens, typically with a strong colonialist attitude, and viewed this technology as basic, primitive, and incapable of developing without an external force, such as the more technologically advanced Europe. This book presents the first comprehensive study on medieval sewn boats of the Indian Ocean, using new and original data. It provides a technical analysis of the ship timbers recently discovered at al-Balid and Qalhat, Oman, in a comparative context. Pieces are examined from a material perspective, and then compared with textual, iconographic, ethnographic, archaeological, and experimental archaeological evidence. It contextualizes the ship timbers within the broader material networks in the Indian Ocean during the medieval Islamic period, thereby increasing our knowledge of maritime communities and their shipbuilding technology.

Abstract

The Kyrenia ship, a Greek merchantman built around 315 BC and sunk off the north coast of Cyprus 294-291 BC, was excavated between 1967 and 1972 under the direction of Michael Katzev. The importance of this ship lies in the extraordinary state of preservation of the hull, allowing great insights into ancient shipbuilding, and in the cargo it was carrying. Its hold was full of Rhodian transport amphoras and its cabin pottery was also mostly made on Rhodes, which was probably its home port. Its trade route ran between Rhodes, Cyprus, the Levant, and possibly Egypt. This first of a planned multi-volume publication includes a detailed history of the excavation of the ship, as well as the most important objects for determining the date of its sinking. These include the primary cargo, transport amphorae, with four different types from Rhodes; fewer examples from Samos and the Cyclades (Paros), and possibly northern Greece, Cyprus and the Levant. The Rhodian amphora stamps date the shipwreck to between 294 and 291 BC. The second most-helpful dating material comprises vessels and utensils (cups and saucers, cooking pots and grills, serving bowls and spoons, water jars and pitchers) used by the crew. For most categories, four examples were found, suggesting a crew of four. Scientific analyses show that the majority were again made in Rhodes. Seven bronze coins were recovered, five of which were minted in the name of Alexander the Great and one in the name of Ptolemy I in Cyprus. Together, these objects document not only the date of the sinking but also give evidence of the probable Rhodian home port and trade route of the Kyrenia ship's final voyage.

Abstract

Interstellar Travel: Purpose and Motivations is a comprehensive, technical look at the necessary considerations for interstellar travel addressed by leading experts in the field, from scientists studying possible destinations (exoplanets) and the vast distances between, to those concerned with building institutions and capabilities in society that could sustain such endeavors. In addition to the technical, medical, and anthropological aspects of deep space travel, the ethics and morality of spreading Earth-based life to other worlds is also examined. In the first book of a three-book compilation, Interstellar Travel: Purpose and Motivations offers in-depth, up-to-date and realistic technical and scientific considerations in the pursuit of interstellar travel and is an integral reference for scientists, engineers, researchers and academics working on, or interested in, space development and space technologies.

Abstract

A sweeping new history that reveals how British, African, and American merchants developed the transatlantic slave trade "This is a landmark study given its clear status as easily the best researched and most comprehensive book on the British slave trade to date."-David Eltis, coauthor of Atlas of the Transatlantic Slave Trade "A masterful account of one of the most brutal moments in the history of capitalist modernity. Radburn brilliantly details all aspects of the process of commodification of human beings in the Liverpool slave trade, vividly depicting the long journeys endured by Africans in Africa, across the Atlantic, and in the Americas."-Leonardo Marques, Universidade Federal Fluminense During the eighteenth century, Britain's slave trade exploded in size. Formerly a small and geographically constricted business, the trade had, by the eve of the American Revolution, grown into an Atlantic-wide system through which fifty thousand men, women, and children were enslaved every year. In this sweeping new history, Nicholas Radburn explains how thousands of slaving merchants in Africa, Britain, and the British Americas collectively created this cancerous system by devising highly efficient, but also violent, new business methods. African brokers developed commercial techniques that facilitated the enslavement and sale of millions of people. Britons invented shipping methods that quelled enslaved people's constant resistance on the Middle Passage. And American slave traders formulated brutal techniques through which shiploads of people could be quickly sold to a variety of colonial buyers. Truly Atlantic-wide in its vision, this study shows how the slave trade became one of the most important phenomena in world history and dragged millions of people into the trade's terrible vortex.

Abstract

This book is a selection of research papers presented in 5 consecutive International Ship Stability Workshops (ISSWs) managed by the STAB International Standing Committee in the period 2013–2019 (2013 Brest, 2014 Kuala Lumpur, 2016 Stockholm, 2017 Belgrade, 2019 Helsinki). ISSWs are a long-standing and authoritative series of international technical meetings in the field of stability of ships and ocean vehicles. The book is the fourth of a line of books started 20 years ago and having the main title “Contemporary Ideas on Ship Stability”. It focuses on the state-of-the-art ship stability criteria and covers topics such as ship dynamics in waves, roll damping, stability of damaged ships, model experiments, and effect of stability requirements on ship design and operation. This book helps the readers to understand the current state of the art in the field of ship stability and see how this comes into the development of modern criteria of ship design and operation.
